What is Immersive learning ?

We pride ourselves on our Immersion Modules. But what is immersive learning all about?

Immersive learning seeks to transfer information & skills through a shift in environment => transferring the audience to a more realistic, more playful and more engaging setting. This can be done digitally, it does not require jumping in a plane or bus!

We see this as badly needed in the space of compliance, where ordinary learning tools are often simple “copy-pastes” of the original, ultra-dry, legislation and policy wording. Same setting = same results. Sleep-inducing, hardly appropriate for teaching. No wonder even some risk / compliance officers rush through them in the last hours before the deadline.

Educational research around immersive and contextual techniques is growing. It is already finding that:

  1. Immersion techniques lead to a better learning outcome
  2. There is a range of ways of achieving immersion

Our modules typically include several immersion techniques. We continuously strive to assess what leads to engaged learning – mandatory fun! – and what doesn’t.

This could involve the use of…

  • Gamification
  • Peer to peer learning (eg. forums)
  • Realistic scenarios
  • Ranges of multimedia content
  • Humor / comedy

We look forward to helping you take advantage of the latest immersive techniques !

A little bit about us…

Having worked in financial services for over 10 years, I realised that few things are as demotivating for employees as compliance training. It is often a competition of who can click through screens of information the fastest, before guessing their way through the assessment.

If this was the modus operandi of a school, it would be given a fail by any inspector. So why do we tolerate it in the work place?

At RegHeroes we are convinced there are no inherently “dry” regulatory topics. The key is the form of training delivery. Usage of a range of proven online educational methods – be that through case studies, games, employee-generated content, competitive stimulus or real world scenarios.

We utilise these types of techniques in our apps package, which we call an immersion module. Our target is the “Three E’s” of regulatory knowledge acquisition : Energised, Excited and Engaged employees.

This saves your management and compliance staff time and frustration in having to ensure staff are up to date on new policies and procedures. And, more fundamentally, it ensures your organisation is more robust with each employee being fully versed in their regulatory responsibilities.

Sanctions and the origins of flagman

Sanctions is a “hot topic” in regulation. The present day trade wars show how they’ve become the political weapon du jour.

This has created a potential minefield for financial institutions management and compliance as they consider current and future exposure risks. Key of course is to share this vigilance across the organisation. How do you ensure your employees are fully on top of the latest sanctions regulations?

The “old school” approach is forcefeeding lists of countries and policies – rather like a Victorian primary school teacher. Screen after screen of text-heavy information followed by a multiple choice assessment. Staff are conditioned to retain enough information to meet the short term objective of getting to the 80% pass rate. A week,  or even a day later, those brain cells have been redirected to other content.

There must be a better way!

We’ve developed Flagman to offer a more effective, playful and engaging approach to sanction learning. Think Pacman meets Capture the flag.

The user amasses points by gathering coins and flags of sanctioned countries. Capture the wrong flag or get caught by a chasing ghost and you have an informational time-out. Here a bite size learning pops up followed by a relevant question.

The competitive and intuitive nature means players want to naturally amass more sanction information. This helps them boost their score versus colleagues, get more playtime and reach a personal best. They end the game feeling more energised, at ease and informed – rather than frustrated and depleted.

Flagman is part of our Sanctions Immersion Module, which features a host of apps to help employees become fully sanctions-conscious.
